Is all this thinking getting you anywhere?
“When I look back on all these worries, I remember the story of the old man who said on his deathbed that he had had a lot of trouble in his life, most of which had never happened.”– Winston Churchill
Here is a 6-step process to stop overthinking
Shape the world
Overthinking happens because we want to make difference. One of the fastest ways to see a difference is how you arrange your physical space and workspace. For example, instilling a productivity system will organize your work, making it seem more manageable You can create physical environments to further your mission with your choice of art, music, and room design.
Trust relationships
We also overthink because we don’t trust others. You never know if they will do things correctly or what will happen when you give up control. So your mind replays all the stories of what might happen. Yet, you will go as far as your team/partners. Trust is built by offering people responsibility and seeing what they would do with it. People may surprise you if you give them a chance.
Accept reality
You may overthink because not be where you want to be in life. Yet, if you only view yourself in terms of what you lack, you’ll continue to find more problems. Additionally, if you never attend to your accomplishments you won’t have evidence that you are doing well.
Self-acceptance isn’t about “tolerating.” It’s being honest with where you are. It helps you stop hiding behind some image of who you should be. You can be proud of your wins and losses.
Master yourself
Overthinking also occurs because part of you believes that you won’t be okay when the shit hits the fan. Yet, you have survived all your worst failures so far and made successes to be standing here.
You’ve gotta start seeing your influence. Seeing your impact on the world makes us feel strong and powerful. When you are able to see you make a difference, we get out of our minds and into our lives.
Find purpose
Purpose reduces overthinking. It helps us orient to something beyond our thinking. Overthinking is typically trying to prevent something rather than create something. When we are connected to our purpose we know how to strategically select essential thoughts.
Ask, "does this thought give me a clear step toward my purpose?" If no, let go. Start leaning into, instead of asking, why.
Grow
Having a growth mindset also helps us stop overthinking. Overthinking occurs because we think we need to have everything figured out or else something bad will happen. Yet with a growth mindset, we know that the future will be full of more possibilities. We don’t have to know everything at this moment. We just have to know we will make it work for us.
Invitation
What would it be like if you could invite in a bigger, bolder version of yourself? What if what you wanted was right past the hill of overthinking?
